The place is the Deep South, the time 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Having recently demolished another car, Daisy Werthan, a rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of seventy-two, is informed by her son, Boolie, that henceforth she must rely on the services of a chauffeur. The person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, unemployed black man, Hoke, whom Miss Daisy immediately regards with disdain and who, in turn, is not impressed with his employer's patronizing tone and, he believes, her latent prejudice. But, in a series of absorbing scenes spanning twenty-five years, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer to, and more dependent on, each other, until, eventually, they become almost a couple. Slowly and steadily the dignified, good-natured Hoke breaks down the stern defenses of the ornery old lady, as she teaches him to read and write and, in a gesture of good will and shared concern, invites him to join her at a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. As the play ends Hoke has a final visit with Miss Daisy, now ninety-seven and confined to a nursing home, and while it is evident that a vestige of her fierce independence and sense of position still remain, it is also movingly clear that they have both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible—and that times and circumstances would ever allow them to publicly admit.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C., of September 11, 2001, the creative director of New York City's Flea Theater Company, wanted to stage a theater piece which would deal with the human impact of this tragedy. When Simpson met journalist Anne Nelson, he discovered a true life story which dealt with the September 11 incidents in an intimate but affecting manner, and he encouraged her to adapt her story into a play; the drama quickly became a major critical success, and Simpson made his screen directorial debut with this film adaptation. Joan is a veteran journalist who through a friend finds herself taking on an unusual assignment: Nick is a captain in the New York Fire Department who lost eight of the 12 men in his company while attempting to evacuate the World Trade Center towers following the terrorist attacks. Nick has been given the responsibility of delivering their eulogies at a series of memorial services, but Nick has no experience with such things and isn't sure of what to say. Joan volunteers to help, and over the course of several days she interviews Nick, finding out how much (or how little) he knew about the men under his command, and together they try to find the words to honor each man's memory, and pay tribute to their sacrifices in the larger picture of a national tragedy.

Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award® for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.

Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, RENT follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city. They include Mark, a filmmaker and the narrator of the story; his former girlfriend, Maureen, a performance artist; Maureen's lover, Joanne, a public interest lawyer; Mark's roommate Roger, a musician; Mimi, an exotic dancer, with whom Roger falls in love; Tom Collins, a computer genius; Collins' lover, Angel, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former member of the group who, after marrying into a wealthy family, has become their landlord. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

Fantasyland Theatrical Productions at the POINTE Performing Arts Center (Ppac) is pleased to announce the 2012 season “Portraits of Life” – join us as we explore and remember the joys and tragedies of life.

2012 Season

PORTRAITS OF LIFE

January 13-January 29: M*A*S*H

February 17-March 4: To Kill A Mockingbird

March 30-April 15: Titanic: The Musical - The 100th Anniversary Performance

May 4-May 20: Regrets Only

June 8-June 24: On Golden Pond

July 13-July 29: The Boys Next Door

August 17-September 2: Edges: A New Musical - Winner of the 2007 Jonathan Larson Award

September 28-October 14: Wit

November 9-November 25: Love! Valour! Compassion!

December 6-December 16: North Pole Musical

The organization’s president Christian St. John states “this season gives audiences a chance to reflect on life and on history.” Specifically, M*A*S*H takes us back to revisit a war that was fought by a generation and then relived through sorrow and through laughter for another generation on televisions all across America. To Kill a Mockingbird not only explores Black History, it asks us to consider tangential issues such as the rise of Adolf Hitler, the role of parents as educators, and awareness of the need for sensitivity toward those individuals who are perceived as different. Titanic open 100 years to the date of when the lavish ship first left dry dock and closes 100 years to the day of the vessel’s demise, reminding us of a century of innovation and of one of the greatest disasters in transportation history. Regrets Only asks: what happens when religion and politics mix? The answer? Ten percent of the American workforce all decides to call in sick on the same day. Comedy? Tragedy? That depends on whether or not you’re a bride about to get married and all your entourage is suddenly unavailable. On Golden Pond is a well-known and much beloved dramatic comedy that shows us how love can endure and grow to create a lifetime of golden memories. The Boys Next Door reminds us that the handicapped, like the rest of us, want only to love, laugh, and find some meaning and purpose in the brief time that they, like their more fortunate brothers, are allotted on this earth. Edges: A New Musical asks the critical questions Who am I? Where am I going? Do we, as a society, stay on the edge or allow ourselves to stay behind. Do we strive to move forward in life, or do we stay stagnant. Wit promotes awareness of ovarian cancer and other female cancers while also allowing us, through the words of John Donne, to sneak a glimpse into our shared mortality. Love! Valour! Compassion! recognizes LGBT pride by presenting these three traits not as gay or straight, but as human. We close our season by inviting audiences to share the joy of the season in an original musical celebration - North Pole Musical. Once again, our second season offers something for everyone.

Ppac is offering dinner and a show packages for all shows that include parking validation and complete meal at Taverna Opa or BB Kings for $40 as well as regular admission tickets for $15-$20.

To find out more and to reserve tickets call the box office at (407)374-3587 or visit the theatre’s website http://www.pointearts.org

You are invited to Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Orlando, FL -- Fantasyland Theatrical Productions at the POINTE Performing Arts Center (Ppac) is set to present David Auburn’s drama Proof.

Starring Natalie Nicole Reed, Keith Kurlin, Casey Lehman, and Larry Stallings, this gripping play traces moments in the life of Catherine, the daughter of a brilliant but mentally disturbed mathematician, recently deceased, as she tries to come to grips with her possible inheritance: her father’s insanity. Complicating matters are one of her father's ex-students who wants to search through her father’s papers and her estranged sister who shows up to help settle the family’s affairs. Can Catherine prove her father's work? Can Catherine prove her fears of following in her father's footsteps (both mathematically and mentally) unfounded?
